FAQ
What's the difference between PLA Basic and PLA+?
PLA Basic is the everyday, all-purpose spool — smooth, forgiving, and the best value for daily projects. PLA+ is formulated for extra toughness and impact resistance, so it suits functional parts that need to take a knock. If you're weighing the upgrade, we break down the real-world difference in PLA+ vs. PLA Basic: is the upgrade worth the extra cost.
Do I need a heated bed to print this?
No. PLA Basic prints fine on an unheated bed with a glue stick or similar adhesive for grip. If your printer has a heated bed, set it to 50–60°C and you won't need glue at all. If the first layer still lifts or won't stick, work through our bed adhesion troubleshooting guide in order before changing anything else.
What nozzle temperature should I use?
Start around 200–210°C at normal speeds (50–100 mm/s). If you're printing faster (100–200 mm/s), raise the nozzle to 210–240°C so extrusion keeps up. The fastest way to find your exact number is a temperature tower — our guide to your first calibration print explains how to read one properly.
Is this filament compatible with my printer?
Yes. PLA Basic works with virtually any 1.75mm FDM printer, including Bambu Lab, Creality, Prusa, Anycubic, and Elegoo machines. If you're running an AMS or another multi-material unit, our AMS setup walkthrough covers getting spools recognized and feeding reliably.
How much filament is on one spool?
Each spool holds 1kg net of filament, roughly 330m in length. Gross weight including the spool is about 1.3kg. Every spool label carries the batch number and full specs — here's what each field on the label means.
Does this filament warp or crack during printing?
Rarely. PLA Basic is formulated for low shrinkage (0.3–0.5%), so warping and cracking stay minimal even on larger prints, and no enclosure is needed. If corners still lift on a big flat part, warping 101 explains the physics and the fixes. Parts that split cleanly along a layer line are a different problem — see layer adhesion troubleshooting.
Is PLA Basic safe for food contact?
PLA itself is a food-safe base material, but we don't recommend printing tableware or anything for direct food contact. Coloring additives and nozzle contamination during printing can introduce non-food-safe elements, and layer lines trap bacteria. The same reasoning applies to pet bowls and feeders — we cover it in detail in our guide to safe filament choices for pet prints.
How should I store unused filament?
Keep it in a dry, sealed container with desiccant, ideally below 20% relative humidity. That prevents the moisture absorption that causes stringing, bubbling, and brittle prints. Our full guide to filament storage, humidity, and shelf life covers what actually works and what's a waste of money.
My filament feels damp or prints are stringy — what do I do?
Damp filament is the most common cause of stringing, popping, and brittle prints. Dry the spool at 45–50°C for 4–6 hours in a filament dryer, then let it cool before loading. Our guide to drying filament at home compares ovens, dry boxes, and dedicated dryers if you don't have one yet. If stringing persists after drying, it's a retraction problem — see our step-by-step retraction tuning guide.
Can I mix PLA Basic colors on the same print?
Yes. If your printer supports multi-color printing via an AMS or similar system, PLA Basic colors are consistent spool-to-spool, so combinations print predictably. See setting up Filazoo filament in your AMS for the configuration, or changing filament mid-print if you're swapping colors by hand.
What's the shelf life of an unopened spool?
Unopened and properly sealed, PLA Basic keeps for 2+ years as long as it's away from moisture and direct sunlight. Once the bag is open, the clock is set by your storage conditions rather than the date — how to store filament properly explains what to keep an eye on.

A
Anonymous used to print a detailed miniature chair. Color is good. Not sure if it was the printer, filament, or me that there were some rough places on one side. Still very new at this.
A
Anonymous very smooth extrusion, excellent bed adhesion, and hardly any stringing. The filament flows evenly and the layers bond really well
