Changing Filament Mid-Print: A Safe Step-by-Step Guide

Running low mid-print, or wanting to swap in a different color partway through, doesn't have to mean starting over. A mid-print filament change is routine on most printers if you do it at the right moment and purge properly — done at the wrong moment, or done sloppily, it can leave a visible defect or ruin the part entirely.
Here's when it's safe, the actual step-by-step, the mistakes that cause most failures, and when to just let the print fail and start fresh instead.
When this is safe to do
The rule is simple: pause at a layer change, not mid-layer. Most printers and slicers let you trigger a pause at a specific height or layer number, and that's the only time you want to actually stop and swap filament. Pausing mid-layer stops the nozzle in the middle of an active extrusion path — resuming from that exact point, at the exact right position and with the exact right amount of plastic already laid down, is much harder to get clean than resuming at the clean boundary between two layers, where the nozzle simply lifts, moves, and starts the next layer fresh.
If your printer supports a scheduled pause (pause at layer N) rather than only a manual pause-whenever-you-hit-the-button, use it — it guarantees the pause lands exactly at a layer boundary instead of wherever you happened to notice the spool running low.
Step-by-step
- Pause at a layer change. Trigger the pause via a scheduled layer-height pause if available, or manually as close to a layer boundary as you can manage.
- Maintain hotend heat. Don't let the nozzle cool down while paused — most printers keep the hotend at temperature automatically during a pause, but confirm this rather than assuming it. A cooled nozzle with filament sitting in it risks a clog before you even get to the color change.
- Remove the old filament cleanly. Retract it fully out of the extruder and hotend rather than just cutting it at the spool — you want a clean removal, not leftover material jammed partway down the path.
- Load the new filament. Feed it in until you see it extruding cleanly at the nozzle tip, confirming it's fully seated and flowing before you move on.
- Purge until the flow is clean. Extrude manually (most printers have a "purge" or "extrude" function accessible during a pause) until the old color and any transition blend are completely flushed out and only the new filament is coming through — don't stop the first moment the new color appears, keep going until it's consistent.
- Resume the print. Once flow is clean and consistent, resume from the paused layer.
Common mistakes
Not purging enough
This is the most common failure in a mid-print change, by a wide margin. Stopping the purge as soon as you see a hint of the new color means the next several layers of the print will show a visible blend — streaks or a gradient of the old and new colors mixed together — instead of a clean transition. Purge longer than feels necessary; a little extra wasted filament during the purge is a much better trade than a visibly muddy transition band permanently baked into the part.
Letting the nozzle cool and clog before resuming
If the hotend isn't actively maintaining temperature during the pause, or if you take too long swapping filament while it slowly cools, the plastic sitting in the nozzle can partially solidify. Resuming at that point can produce a partial clog, uneven initial extrusion, or in worse cases, a jam that stops the print entirely. Keep the swap efficient once you start it, and double-check your printer's pause behavior (does it hold temperature, or does it cool down automatically to save power?) before you rely on it.
When not to attempt it
A mid-print filament change isn't the right move for every situation, even when it's mechanically possible:
- Very fine-detail layers. If the layer you'd be pausing at has fine features — thin walls, small text, delicate overhangs — the tiny blob or seam that even a well-executed purge and resume can leave behind is more visible and more likely to matter than it would be on a larger, simpler layer.
- Structural sections where a small defect matters. A purge blob or a resume seam represents a tiny discontinuity in the print. On a decorative part that's usually invisible; on a load-bearing section of a functional part, it can be a real weak point. If the layer you're forced to pause at falls in a structural area, weigh whether it's better to accept the risk, or restart the print with a fresh spool loaded from the beginning instead.
Special cases worth planning for separately
Switching between materials, not just colors
Changing color within the same material (PLA to a different color of PLA) is the simplest version of this process, since nozzle and bed temperature don't need to change. Switching materials mid-print — PLA to PETG, for instance — adds a step: you generally need to adjust the hotend temperature to the new material's verified range before purging, since purging a new material through a nozzle still set for the old material's (often lower) temperature can under-extrude or clog. Confirm the new material's target temperature before you start feeding it in, not after you notice the purge isn't flowing cleanly.
Running out unexpectedly versus planning a swap
A planned color change gives you the luxury of choosing the layer to pause at. Running out of filament unexpectedly doesn't — the printer either detects it via a runout sensor and pauses automatically (ideally at whatever layer it happened to be on, which may not be a clean boundary), or it simply grinds against an empty spool until you notice. If your printer has a runout sensor, keep it enabled; an automatic pause mid-layer is still recoverable using the steps above, just with a slightly higher chance of a visible seam than a deliberately planned layer-boundary pause.
