Tabletop Miniatures and Terrain: Choosing Detail-Friendly Filament and Settings

If you've spent any time in tabletop hobby forums, you've seen the resin-versus-FDM argument play out a hundred times. FDM miniatures will never match resin's fine detail, and anyone telling you otherwise is setting you up for disappointment. What FDM printing is genuinely good at is fast, durable, paintable minis and terrain at a fraction of the cost and mess — as long as you set your expectations correctly and pick the right filament and settings for the job.
It's also worth saying plainly that FDM minis and terrain have gotten noticeably better over the last couple of years, mostly from slicer improvements around fine-detail handling rather than any change in filament itself. If your last attempt at FDM miniatures was a few years ago and it left a bad impression, it's worth another look — the gap between FDM and resin for miniature work has narrowed some, even though it hasn't closed entirely and isn't likely to for facial detail specifically.
Why Standard PLA Is Usually the Right Call
It's tempting to think tougher filaments like PETG or TPU would make more durable minis for gaming use, but that's solving the wrong problem. Miniatures don't need impact resistance or flex — they need to hold fine detail and stay dimensionally stable so a rank of soldiers all stand the same height and a base fits its intended slot. PLA Basic is stiffer and holds sharp edges better straight off the plate than PETG, which tends to be slightly more forgiving of fine layer definition due to its different cooling behavior. TPU is the wrong material entirely here — its flexibility works against you when you need a mini to stand rigidly upright and hold a pose. For minis and terrain, boring, predictable PLA is the correct choice, not a compromise.
There's a durability angle worth mentioning too: minis get handled a lot during actual games — picked up, moved across a table, occasionally knocked over. PLA's rigidity, the same property that helps it hold sharp detail, also means a base or a thin weapon protrusion can snap if a mini gets dropped or sat on. This is a real trade-off, not a reason to switch materials — a broken PLA mini is usually a quick superglue fix, and the alternative of printing minis in a tougher but less detailed material isn't actually a better outcome for most tabletop use.
Setting Honest Expectations: FDM vs. Resin
This needs to be said plainly rather than glossed over: if you want face detail sharp enough to read under a magnifying glass, resin printing is genuinely better suited to that job, full stop. A 0.4mm nozzle has a physical limit on how fine a detail it can extrude, and no amount of settings tweaking gets an FDM printer to resin-level facial detail on a 28mm miniature. What FDM does very well is larger-scale detail — armor plating, weapon silhouettes, cloak folds, base texture — at print speeds and material costs resin can't touch, especially once you're printing an army instead of one character model.
Where you can meaningfully close the gap is layer height. Dropping to 0.1–0.12mm layers on a standard 0.4mm nozzle noticeably sharpens facial features and fine surface detail compared to a default 0.2mm layer — it's a real, visible improvement, just not a resin-level one. Expect print times to go up significantly at that layer height, which is fine for a handful of hero models but worth reconsidering if you're printing 20 identical infantry minis for a game army.
Nozzle size is worth thinking about too, separately from layer height. A standard 0.4mm nozzle is the right default for most people and most minis — it's a reasonable balance of detail and print speed, and it's what most slicer profiles and community-shared settings assume. If you're specifically chasing the sharpest possible detail on hero models and you're willing to accept much slower print speeds, a 0.2mm nozzle is an option some miniature printers move to, but it's a meaningful hardware and workflow change, not a setting you flip for one print — not something to jump into before you've gotten comfortable with your printer on a standard nozzle first.
Terrain Is a Different Job Than Minis
Terrain pieces — buildings, ruins, hills, scatter terrain — are larger, less detail-critical, and printed in bulk more often than individual minis. Standard 0.2mm layers and PLA Basic are entirely appropriate here; there's no reason to slow a print down to 0.12mm layers for a rock formation or a ruined wall section where the visual interest comes from overall shape rather than fine surface detail.
This is also where filled filaments genuinely pull double duty. Marble PLA's natural mottled texture reads as stone or weathered rock right out of the printer, which means a ruin or a cliff face can look convincingly aged with zero painting — useful if you're building out a big terrain table and don't have time to hand-paint every scatter piece. It won't replace a fully painted centerpiece building, but for background terrain that just needs to look like rock or old stone, it does real work with no post-processing at all. Terrain also benefits from a slightly different infill approach than minis. Large terrain pieces like buildings or hills don't need to be solid — a lower infill percentage, often 10 to 15 percent, keeps print time and material use reasonable on pieces that can otherwise take a very long time at full density, and the structural demands on a terrain piece sitting on a game table are modest compared to something that gets picked up and handled constantly.
Color Strategy for Game-Piece Armies
Hand-painting a full army is a real time investment, and not everyone wants to commit to it before they've even played a game with the models. Printing directly in PLA Rainbow or one of the Silk PLA colors gives you a visually distinct, table-ready army straight off the plate — genuinely useful for differentiating factions, unit types, or player colors at a glance during a game, even if it's not a substitute for a fully painted display piece. It's a practical middle ground: print your first army in a distinct color to actually get playing, then go back and paint your favorite pieces once you know which models you're keeping long-term.
A Realistic Workflow
For most tabletop hobbyists, the practical approach looks like this: print bulk terrain and background minis in PLA Basic at standard 0.2mm layers, print hero models or characters you plan to paint and display at 0.1–0.12mm layers for the sharper detail, and use Marble PLA for stone-look terrain pieces where you want a finished look without painting time. None of this requires switching materials mid-army — it's the same PLA family throughout, just adjusted layer height and color choice by what each specific piece needs to do.
