What Gridfinity Actually Is

Gridfinity is an open modular storage standard built around a 42mm grid unit. You print a baseplate (or several, snapped together), then print bins and inserts sized in whole or half grid units that snap into that baseplate. Because the standard is open and dimensioned in a spec anyone can print to, it doesn't matter what printer or brand made your baseplate versus your bins — a 2x2 bin from one designer fits a baseplate from a completely different designer, as long as both were printed close to the intended dimensions.

That last part is the catch, and it's exactly why filament choice matters here.

There's also a practical, non-glamorous reason Gridfinity took off the way it did: it scales down to a single junk drawer and up to a full garage workbench without changing the underlying system.   3. A stackable tool holder. Search "Gridfinity tool holder" for inserts sized for hex keys, screwdrivers, and pliers. Look for a design with cutouts sized to your actual tools rather than a generic one.
  4. A label-base bin set. Search "Gridfinity label bin" — these have a flat front lip designed for a printed or handwritten label, which makes a drawer actually scannable at a glance instead of guesswork.

Print Settings That Work

You don't need exotic settings for Gridfinity. Most bins and baseplates print without supports if oriented right side up, since the geometry is mostly straight walls and flat floors. If a specific design calls for supports on an overhang, check the model notes before you assume — some designs bake in bridging that's meant to print unsupported.

Because baseplates are large, flat prints, first-layer adhesion across the whole surface matters more than usual. A few other settings worth checking before you print a whole batch of bins in one sitting: make sure your slicer's horizontal expansion or "XY compensation" setting is at zero or matches your printer's known calibration, since a nonzero value here directly changes how tightly bins fit their baseplate.
