FAQ
Does ABS require an enclosure?
Strongly recommended. An enclosure holds a stable chamber temperature, which is what prevents warping, corner lifting, and layer splitting on ABS. Warping 101 explains why high-shrinkage materials behave this way and what else helps.
Can ABS be printed outdoors or in a living area?
Print ABS in a properly ventilated workspace, and avoid running it in an occupied room without ventilation. If ventilation is the constraint — a classroom or a home office, for example — PLA or PETG is the safer default: see our teacher's starter guide to safe, reliable filament.
Can ABS be acetone-smoothed?
Yes — acetone vapor smooths compatible ABS surfaces to a near-injection-molded finish. It must be done with proper fire, ventilation, and chemical-safety precautions, since acetone is highly flammable. It's a common finishing step for cosplay armor and props.
Is ABS suitable for outdoor use?
For limited periods, yes — but prolonged UV exposure fades and degrades ABS. For anything living outdoors permanently, ASA is the right choice.
